Is Solar Power really cheaper than Nuclear Fuels?
August 14, 2010 1 CommentHere is my answer to a critical, somewhat still pro Nuclear article on getsolar.com.
The article scrutinizes a study that has been published by the Waste Awareness & reduction Network.
The criticism suggests that the solar power costs are not really lower than for than Nuclear Fuels.
I absolutely contradict, if we take our children into account (and we should, shouldn’t we?).
Here is my counterplea:
“Hi,
sorry, but this analysis again neglects all too humanly one off the most important aspects… the minute you calculate the costs for protecting all this nuclear waste for at least 1 Mio. years from harming humans and nature, renewable energy is already thousands of percent cheaper than nuclear fuels…
And since we cannot even guarantee a secure waste deposit for only some hundred or thousand years, finding and building secure shelters for hundreds of thousands of years is non-affordable, not to mention doable
But your analysis again tends to forget that, well, what do we care about man in say 2000 years…if man then is still able to read our Nuclear warning Signs (for a discussion see Nuclear Sign), that is.
He won’t, we mostly cannot read signs from 2000 years ago…
So we make nuclear fuels affordable by neglecting our descendants…
This is very human, but not scientific.
Daniel”

Alternative Fuels Expansion
It is easy to say that nuclear is more expensive just because you feel like it. Is it really that expensive to dig a half a mile hole and close it. The kind of natural disater that lifts any meaningfull amounts nuclear waste from such depths would be so severe that some nuclear waste would be the least of our problems.
